Vinismo is written by its readers -- Internet users like you -- and we need your help! Try our getting started guide to learn how.
Welcome to Vinismo! This article is specifically for people familiar with Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Vinismo's format was inspired by Wikipedia, and we use the same MediaWiki software to run the site. If you're used to Wikipedia, you should feel right at home -- although you should still probably check out the Welcome, newcomers page.
There are some differences between Vinismo and Wikipedia that are very important to know. Please read this page thoroughly. Also note: Vinismo is not a project of the Wikimedia Foundation; we're not legally or technically associated with Wikipedia.
edit Licensing
Our copyright policy is easier for users, but more stringent for contributors than Wikipedia's. We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 license rather than the GNU Free Documentation License to keep our content free. Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 is a lot more appropriate for small pieces of content. See Why Vinismo isn't GFDL for details.
This means that in general articles from Wikipedia cannot be copied into Vinismo. It's a violation of the GFDL to relicense GFDL content. Unless you are the sole author of the article -- that is, if you hold the original copyright, and can thus relicense your own work -- please don't copy articles from Wikipedia.
This may seem like a hassle, but it's actually not all that bad. Most content from Wikipedia is not actually appropriate for Vinismo.
edit Goals
If you review our goals and non-goals, there are a couple of things that stick out:
- Vinismo is not an encyclopedia. We don't need to have immense, detailed articles about everything and anything. Articles in Vinismo are references for wine enthusiasts; subjects not directly or indirectly related to wine should be avoided.
- Vinismo is targeted towards print versions. We want wine lovers out on a wine trip to be able to print out copies of our pages, copy them, give them to friends, etc. Please keep this in mind when authoring articles -- the print version matters!
edit Fair Use
We try not to use of copyrighted pictures, text, or other media into Vinismo, even with the notion of "fair use" that Wikipedians know well. The reason for that is, we really want our users to be able to redistribute our contents outside of Vinismo. "Fair use" only applies to one specific use, thus forbidding redistribution.
The only exception to that rule in Vinismo is wine labels which are necessary to illustrate wine pages. See Wine labels and fair use for more information.
edit Style differences
Here are some things you should look out for stylistically:
- We really prefer an informal tone, not an encyclopedic one. Lively writing is welcome... and encouraged!
- Unlike Wikipedia, we encourage original research. We want you to contribute both first-hand factual information as well as your subjective opinions, but first-person accounts should be avoided.
- Vinismo does not follow a strict encyclopedic "Neutral Point Of View". Instead, our guiding mantra is "Be fair". Fairness means that descriptions provide a balanced summary of the experiences of wine lovers. For Vinismo, Vinismo:the wine lover comes first; the needs and priorities of others — such as wine producers and other wine-related businesses — are given less weight.
- It's a common thing on [[Wikipedia]] to [[Wikilink]] practically every [[noun]] or [[date]] or [[other term]] you write. Because Vinismo is aimed at providing a practical wine guide rather than a massive collection of general knowledge, most terms will never become articles here. Unless it's the name of a wine, varietal, appellation, or any other wine topic, it shouldn't be Wikilinked. Most commonly mistaken Wiki word? Why, [[Wikipedia]], of course!
edit Categories
Vinismo doesn't use categories like Wikipedia does. This is a choice we made to avoid many complexities that came up when we first tried to use them - yes, we tried, but we failed to make them really efficient and/or useful. However, the Category functionality is still available in our system, so that our users can try to develop a clever category system. We failed at doing so when starting this project, but who knows? Somewhere out there, there may be a genius who finds a good way to use MediaWiki categories in a wine guide. We're looking forward to hear your ideas on this.
edit Links to and from Wikipedia
We use interwiki links to link to Wikipedia. To do this, just create a regular internal link [[between two brackets]] and name the Wikipedia page you're linking by simpling typing wikipedia: in front of it. Yes, it's that simple.
Note also that interlanguage links ([[fr:Californie]] and the like) link between language versions of Vinismo. Whenever you add such a link inside a page, it will automatically appear in the language menu on the left. There's no shorthand for linking to different-language versions of Wikipedia; if you think about it, most such links aren't appropriate for English-language Vinismo.

edit Terminology
Some terms you may be used to in Wikipedia have analogs in Vinismo. Some things you might be looking for:
- "Village Pump" -> Wine Bar
- "be bold" -> plunge forward
- Etc.
