Vinismo:Appellation or Region pages

From Vinismo

Jump to: navigation, search

The Appellation or Region template can be chosen with a simple click in the template selector, every time you start a new page.

The same template is used to describe any of the geographic subdivisions used in a country to identify wine origins.

Before starting the new page, make sure your region or appellation is not already listed. Most regions and official appellations are already listed in Vinismo for all major wine-producing countries. Try different names that could have been used already, especially if they involve a foreign character accentuation.

Not all countries use an appellation system. Some use regional and sub-regional denominations, with no appellation system per se. Others only use broad regions to identify wine origin. See Vinismo:Geographical hierarchy.

edit How to start an appellation or region page

To start a new page, there are two ways. The best way (the Wiki way, at least) is to create a link to it from another page.

Typically, appellation and/or sub-region pages are linked from region pages, and region pages are linked from country pages.

The other way is to start the new page by typing its name in your browser's address bar, just after the /en/ part.

When you're in the edit window for your new page, before typing anything, you can choose the pre-filled Appellation or region template with one click of your mouse.

edit Appellation and region naming conventions

Some regions have several, different names due to historical and cultural reasons. A little research can help confirming the name most commonly used to identify wines from a specific region. If no English names are in use for the region, always choose the local spelling and accentuation - the same way it's written on their wine bottles.

edit Typical sections

These are the pre-defined sections you'll find in the template when creating a new appellation or region page. If you don't have anything to add to a particular section, leave it empty; other helpful, knowledgeable Vinismo users will surely come and fill it.

edit Introduction (top of the page)

Please sum up in one or two sentences the location of your appellation or region.

edit Tasting

Please write here an overview of the wines from that region or appellation: aromas and tastes, differences between production zones, recommended food pairings, prices...

edit Facts and figures

You can list here some quick production and economic data: cultivated area, annual production average, main varietals used, etc.

edit History

This is where you tell the story of the region or appellation, from its start to the present day. You can be as epic as you want in your writing; winemaking is always an heroic achievement!

edit Geography and climate

Wine origin has a great impact on a wine's taste, at least as its production technique or the varietals it's made of. Feel free to describe in great lenghts the specificity of your appellation or region geography, topology, geology, climate, and other agricultural factors.

edit See also

This is where you put links to other pages or websites related to this appellation or region.

edit Sidebar: Sub-regions and/or wineries

This section should be edited separately in the sidebar.

  • Region pages: If no sub-regional denomination exists, you can directly list wineries, which in turn will list individual wines from your region. If there are sub-regional denominations - i.e., if you're editing a region which is divided into sub-regions or appellations - you can use the sidebar to list them.
  • Appellation or sub-region pages: List the wineries in the sidebar of your page. They can also be listed in the broader region page if they're not too numerous.

edit Using the {{isIn|...}} tag

Don't forget to fill our geographical hierarchy tag. It will automatically create breadcrumbs on the top of your page indicating which country and/or region your page belongs to.

To do this, just fill the name of the first parent region or country, after the vertical bar in the {{isIn|...}} code at the bottom of the page. Make sure you're using the correct spelling for that region or country page. If you make a mistake, you'll know it at first, because the breadcrumbs won't correctly display the full geographical hierarchy.

edit {{isARegion}}, {{isAnAppellation}} and other tags

You can also tell what the article is about, to help making our database more precise for people searching for wines or adding new wines. You just have to select one of the proposed tags such as {{isARegion}}, {{isAnAppellation}}, {{isASubRegion}}, or create context-specific tags such as {{isAState}}, {{isACanton}}, {{isAProvince}}, {{isACounty}}, etc.

edit Illustrations

Feel free to add nice illustrations showing landscapes and vineyard from your appellation or region. Just make sure that they are compatible with our Copyleft licence. See Adding images for details.
