The French Vin de pays classification is used for table wines filling a number of criteria, such as geographic origin, yield, alcohol value, and other chemical properties. This classification was made into law in 1979.

"Vins de pays" come in three categories: Regional appellations (covering large parts of France), Zone appellations (covering an administrative or historical region), and Departmental appellations (covering the territory of a French "département").
