Varietals or winegrapes are grape species used to make wine, also called Vinis Vitifera.

The choice of a varietal or a blend of varietals is determinant in the final aromas, flavors and character of a wine, along with other factors such as geography, soil, climate and winemaking techniques.

Certain winegrapes have achieved an international reputation, and are grown in many wine regions of the world. Here's a list of these so-called "international" varietals:

The ubiquity of these grapes is not an obstacle to wine diversity; geography and climate also play a crucial role in winemaking. While these grapes behave the same way and share the same properties everywhere, they can produce radically different wines from one region to another.
