edit Guidelines

So now it is Vintage, Wine, Location (eg: 2006 Domaine Niko Cotes du Plateau) ? Hugh 16:48, 27 July 2007 (EDT)

Yup. YEAR / NAME / APELLATION in English. APPELLATION / NAME / YEAR in French. niko - vinismo

edit New wines

So I just entered a couple of inexpensive (in Switzerland) Italian wines and am not sure if I did it "right". If you give me some guidance I'll try to turn it into documentation. -- Mark 16:24, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

edit Spam blacklist

Just so you know, there's a spam blacklist for blocking links to servers that have been known to spam the site. You just add the server name (not the rest of the URL!) to the list. Any points in the name have to be escaped with backslashes -- "foo\.example\.com", for example.

If someone tries to save a page with one of these hostnames in an extlink, the page won't be saved.

I've also used an IP block on the IP addresses that spammed the sidebar of the main page. We'll see if that helps -- I haven't seen it work so well in the past, though. --Evan 10:23, 15 November 2007 (EST)

edit Accents etc

I don't know what to say about accents. You will never win that battle, maybe just give up? (and people will make sure they are OK on the French side). In any case, why not just let the wikiists fix it for you? that's the whole point of a wiki, it will get better over time. the only problem I see is how search reads accents (i suggest you replace accents with non-accents in search).

Hugh 19:39, 1 February 2008 (EST)

You're right. I think when it comes to wine, we have to keep local syntaxes because it's more authentic, terroir-centric that way. As you said, people with non-compatible keyboards just will get fixed (as I will fix your edits of tonight). But you really understood the biggest problem with that: Search. Search should be accent-neutral like it is in Google. the good news is that it's in our to-do list. The bad news is that our to-do list is very long. niko - vinismo 22:29, 1 February 2008 (EST)

edit Ugly Name

So this sucks see: http://vinismo.com/en/2005_S.C.E_P._Bernard_d%27Arfeuille_Chateau_Toumalin

It should be named just 2005 Chateau Toumalin but I put in the "producer"/proprietaire who is Arfeuille. But that messes up the wine name. Comments? Hugh 19:46, 1 February 2008 (EST)

Argh.... I know, this is still a problem. If we don't "force" the name of the article to include the producer, through the form-based name creation, then people just name their wines with low-specificity name such as "2005 Merlot". In the case of French names this is less necessary but believe me, we have to force users to include the producer's name in the article name in most cases. Anyway, I'll fix this particular problem by renaming the page - after all it's a wiki so any ugliness eventually gets fixed right ? niko - vinismo 22:21, 1 February 2008 (EST)
So, the "Producer" should be, for instance Chateau Depaneur, or Rosemount Estates. And not the actual company. Hugh 18:53, 6 February 2008 (EST)

edit Vinismo before tasting

When I wander into the SAQ I often come out with a bottle, but I don't always drink it immediately. But if it's on my counter, and I've got my computer nearby, I often think about putting it into the vinismo system, so that when I've tasted it, I can give some comments.Hugh 18:51, 6 February 2008 (EST)

edit Automated redirects for varietal names

I added some automatic redirects for varietals; see the Vinismo:Wine Bar for details. --Evan 11:20, 9 February 2008 (EST)

edit Thanks

For the welcome! I actually met Evan at RCC Palo Alto a month or so ago, and have been meaning to dive into Vinismo ever since…but am only now getting into it. It's a great site, and will help me in my quest to learn more about the local wine industry…a magazine I work for, Edible Portland, will be covering wine in its upcoming issue, so I'm looking to get up to speed right quick =) Anyway, nice to meet you, and thanks again for the welcome. -Pete Forsyth 20:33, 26 June 2008 (EDT)

I couldn't make it to RCC Palo Alto, and I'm sure I missed a lot of stuff. Fortunately Evan was there to present our work. Anyway, it's always a pleasure to meet a new contributor! As I said, please feel free to post any comment about the site - praize and criticism are both welcome! Also, you can go to the Wine Bar if you want to make it a collective talk. nikolai35 20:54, 26 June 2008 (EDT)
Thanks. Oh, one question: do you have an area of more or less complete or featured articles, to give me an idea of what your vision of a good article about a winery, an AVA, or a grape is? Would be nice to have a clearer idea of what we're working toward. -Pete Forsyth 21:08, 26 June 2008 (EDT)
Actually AVAs and the United States appellation system in general is really not well structured yet. The US are the only country where we have articles for every county of every state, and I'm not sure this is ideal (actually they have a "need to be merged" tag for this reason). The problem is most US producers don't use AVA appellations, they just sign their wines with their names and the name of the state and that's it. Which is completely different from European producers who rely a lot on appellations. In general the US articles are far from perfect and any suggestion for a smarter structure will be appreciated... :)
But to answer your question more precisely, here are some of our best articles so far: this is an excellent wine article, here are good articles for appellations here, here and here, a good wine region article here, and a good country article here. Also a good producer page here. nikolai35 21:16, 26 June 2008 (EDT)
Very helpful, thanks! I'll keep that handy on my talk page. -Pete Forsyth 15:40, 27 June 2008 (EDT)
