From Vinismo
Hi! My name is Niko, and along with Evan I'm one of the two founders of Vinismo.
I live in Montréal where I work as a journalist and a web designer. I moved there from Paris about ten years ago. I was born in Corrèze, one of the rare parts of France that produces almost no wine. I have distant cousins in Burgundy who make an excellent Côtes du Couchois, and I often played around in their vineyard during my childhood vacations; however, my real interest in wine came much later in life.
I started Vinismo in April '07 with my good friend Evan, to help wine lovers around the world build the perfect wine Wiki. I'm not a wine expert at all, but I'm fascinated by those who master the subtle art of talking about wine, and I hope to learn a lot from them while building this project.
Yes, that's a beer you see in my hand on this picture. A Fat Tire from Colorado, to be precise. I'd like to show you a picture of me in a beautiful vineyard by the sunset of a warm sunny day, but there aren't many around here (neither vineyards nor warm days). I love wine, though, like many people in Québec, even if we don't grow much wine ourselves. Please pardon me (and edit me!) if you see spelling or grammar errors in my edits. English is my second language. I write much better in French. If you speak it too, you can take a look at my blog, Vulusu.ca.
UPDATE: I GOT MY WINE PIC, FINALLY!
Here I am posing in a vineyard of Côtes du Couchois in the French region of Burgundy.
The grape I'm holding in my hand is the ubiquitous (and delicious) Pinot Noir of Burgundy.
My favorite wines
Of course I didn't try all the wine regions of the world. I'm far from being an expert and I don't pretend to give an comprehensive list. Anyway, here's how my list looks like for now:
- I'm a big fan of Burgundy reds, especially Mercurey, Givry, Santenay, Vosne-Romanée and the darkest Grand Crus of Côte de Nuits. To my opinion they're the single best illustration of the French metaphor for wine: "the blood of the earth".
- In the summer, I like to drink a chilled Cabernet Franc from Loire Valley, like a good Bourgueil or Chinon.
- Elsewhere in Europe, I like bold Riojas from Spain, robust Chianti Classico from Italy, and nice fruity Douros from Portugal.
- My favorite Californian wines are zesty Zinfandels (better served chilled) and strong Syrahs. I tend to avoid those which try to imitate Bordeaux; I prefer the bold audacity of modern experimentation.
