Like nearly every other page on this site, the Main Page is open for anyone to edit. But it is the main welcome point for most new readers of Vinismo, so we would prefer that changes first be discussed here. niko - vinismo 11:59, 23 May 2007 (EDT)

edit Latest wines up in the page

I moved latest wines up to make it proeminent on page load, because it's a crucial element of currentness. If I may say so. It shows that there is activity in Vinismo right now. nikolai35 19:16, 14 April 2008 (EDT)

Yeah, but it moved up at the expense of the browsability. I think it makes more sense to have the wine-browsing section above the latest wines. --Evan 20:06, 14 April 2008 (EDT)
But it's already there on the left menu. Let's try this new positionning for a few days to see if we get used to it. Also, the rationale was brought by the wine blogger I met tonight. He made a very valid point by showing to me what people were searching when coming to his blog. Their top searches are wine names, instead of regions or varietals. They come for the tasting notes first. nikolai35 20:14, 14 April 2008 (EDT)
But we're not making a blog. People searching for Vinismo have their top searches for countries and varietals. For a blog, people know that they are just getting a few wines, and they'd be interested in the latest. For a wine guide like Vinismo, we want to give a first impression that we're comprehensive -- every country, every grape, every region. Listing the latest wines shows that things are lively, but it's not the first thing we should show, and it shouldn't push the Dmoz-style directory below the fold. I've moved things back for now. --Evan 09:11, 15 April 2008 (EDT)

edit Ideas for new sections

Here are some ideas for new sections on the front page. Feel free to add other ideas. nikolai35 22:31, 14 April 2008 (EDT)

  • Featured producer/Producteur en vedette
  • Wine news (updated often) -- news dispatches from the world of wine
  • Top contributors -- ranking contributors according to their contributions. Good for the rewarding feeling when you work on Vinismo. Vinismo co-founders could be excluded from the ranking to avoid unfair advantage :)
  • Image of the week
I think the "Wine Guide" page should concentrate on wine guide content, and that Vinismo:Project is a better place to feature stuff about the project itself. So, featured producer and wine news would go great on this page, and "top contributors" and "image of the week" would go on the project page.
Also, I think "top contributors" is a bad idea. I'd prefer "featured contributors", with a nomination system, since "top contributors" implies competition, some kind of objective ranking system, etc. But I think overconcentration on people is a bad idea. It's a rathole, and wiki isn't really about ego gratification. Wikitravel and Wikipedia are doing great without any "featured contributors". --Evan 09:11, 15 April 2008 (EDT)

edit Candidates for Front Page feature

Next candidates for appellation of the month: Chianti / Chianti Classico / Tuscany / Sherry (needs some work though) nikolai35 00:32, 30 April 2008 (EDT)
