Super-Tuscans are wines created in Tuscany that lie outside the formal appellation system of that region because they are made in a more modern or international style using non-traditional grapes.
The term is historical these days as some of the formerly non-adhering wines now comply with the regulations. A good example is Sassicaia, one of the first Super-Tuscans, that now has its own Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.
