Buenos Aires is Argentina's capital and largest city. Known for its beef and its nightlife. The city is a great place to try and appreciate Argentinian wines.

edit Stores

BA's vinotecas (wine stores) are rightfully proud of their local wines. Most have only Argentine wines, or else an absolutely tiny selection of overseas wines. Currency differences is the reason: Argentines can't afford overseas luxury goods, especially when there are perfectly suitable domestic replacements (like wine). Foreigners visiting Argentina aren't here to drink Italian wines, either. So the market emphasizes Argentine products over all else.

  • Le Vignole, Guatemala 5776, Buenos Aires, Capital Federal, , (5411) 4899-0973 (W). A good-quality neighbourhood vinoteca (wine store) with a range of Argentinian wines, from the inexpensive to the high-priced. The friendly owner is helpful and speaks English.
  • Lo de Joaquin Alberdi, Jorge Luis Borges 1772, Buenos Aires, Capital Federal, , (5411) 4832-5329 (W). Boutique vinoteca catering principally to foreigners looking for wine to ship home. Can ship cases of wine as needed. An extensive collection of Mendoza, Salta, and Jujuy wines, with a tasting cellar in the lower floor. Scheduled tastings by appointment.
  • Winery, Corrientes 300, Buenos Aires, Capital Federal, (5411) 4394-2200 (W). A bulk winestore that makes up in efficiency, prices, and good wine-handling what it lacks in personal touch. This is the go-to place for locals who need a hard-to-find bottle of wine. Almost a dozen locations in Buenos Aires.

edit Bars

Argentinians as a whole are notably light drinkers. Most wine in the city is drunk at home or at restaurants with food, and dedicated "wine bars" are rare.

  • Gran Bar Danzón, Libertad 1161, Buenos Aires, Capital Federal, (5411) 4811 1108 (W). This is one of the few bars that local oenophiles recommend. They have more than 200 wines available in their cellar, and a nice, open atmosphere. The downside: this is a popular after office meeting spot and the place can be packed wall-to-wall on weekends.
