Greece is the oldest wine-producing country in Europe. Wine has been cultivated in Greece for almost 8 millenia. Its Mediterranean climate and rocky soils are optimal for growing wine grapes.
The Wine Institute of Greece, a government agency and part of the Department of Agriculture, nurtures and regulates the wine industry in the country. Started in 1937, the institute stimulated a growth in wine grapes cultivation for export throughout the 1960s and 70s.
Although retsina, the cloying resin-infused wine, is almost synonymous with Greek tavernas, there are a number of Greek appellations producing nuanced and high-quality wines.
