This official classification of red Bordeaux wines was established at the 1855 Paris World Fair, by request of Napoléon III.
This classification lists 60 vineyards of Médoc plus one Graves (Château Haut-Brion).
Another classification was made simultaneously for white wines - see Sauternes and Barsac Cru classification.
The 1855 classification hasn't been changed ever since, except for Château Cantemerle which was added as "5th Grand Cru" in 1856, and Château Mouton-Rothschild which was promoted to "1st Cru" in 1973.
