Bordeaux Blend is a red wine that is made from the traditional varietals that are authorized for use in red Bordeaux. The varietals used are primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that are augmented by Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, [[Malbec],] and rarely, Carmenere.
edit Meritage
In 1988 an organization named the Meritage Alliance was formed in the United States to create a special proprietary label, Meritage, that allows a vintner to create a blended wine while providing the consumer with assurance of quality.
A Meritage wine may not contain more than 90% of any particular varietal, and may also include St. Macaire and Gros Verdot in addition to the classic grapes.
There is also a white Meritage that is made of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Sauvignon Vert.
edit Regions
A "Bordeaux Blend" finds it's origin in the Bordeaux region of France. However, due to the influence of French winemaking throughout the world, this style has become common anywhere Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon have found a home, particularly in the United States and in Chile.
